Installation Questions

  1. What should I enter for the Zaphods Map Central Keybox?
    a) Any filename will work for the purpose of first-time installation. So use the default suggestion; or
    b) An optimal filename would be one which will not be accidentally deleted, and will be backed up. If you have a place on your disk where you save miscellaneous configuration files, use that. If not, we recommend c:\AppsData\ZaphodsMap\ZaphodsCentralKeybox.xml as the filename.
  2. What should I enter for the SlimLogger configuration filename?
    a) Same as above - any filename - use the default; or
    b) For the same reasons as above, use c:\AppsData\ZaphodsMap\SlimLoggerInstallation_Config.xml as the filename.
Both of these files are not terribly critical. They help when upgrading, but otherwise are unimportant. For in-depth information about ZaphodsMap, please see zaphodsmap.com.
  3. Will SlimLogger really work if I install it somewhere other than c:\Program Files\?
Yes. We install to paths that avoid spaces -- all the time.
  4. What should I consider when selecting my data folder?
    a) Any path will work, so use the default. or...
    b) Ideally, you want to choose a folder which will be backed up frequently, perhaps even daily if the SlimLogger reports will be used for billing purposes. Advanced users can change the data folder after installing, by modifying the SlimLogger.exe.config file.
  5. Which network cards should I select?
If in doubt, select all of them.
  6. Will SlimLogger run on Win2003 server?
    Yes.
  7. Will it run on Windows NT 4?
Maybe. It did not work for us on the single machine we tested.

General Questions

  1. Something is not working. What should I do?
Please refer to the Troubleshooting chapter in the SlimLoggerReference.pdf book.
  2. Is there a graphical user interface for SlimLogger?
No. People use Notepad or other editors to maintain the configuration files, and a web browser to view the reports.
  3. Can I get a count of bandwidth used for web access to my site, separately from ftp access?
    Yes.
  4. Can I run my own reports on the SlimLogger data?
Yes. SlimLogger stores data in XML format. If you program in XSL, you can query SlimLogger's database directly. Otherwise, you can import the XML data into your favorite database management system.
